5 questions with Gaynor Family Regional Library

Outside of Gaynor Family Regional Library.

A new 5 questions with interview is here! For this instalment, we had the pleasure of interviewing Katherine Anderson, the Information Technology & Public Services Coordinator at Gaynor Family Regional Library.

The Gaynor Family Regional Library is located in the city of Selkirk, Manitoba just north of Winnipeg. They offer traditional library services, room bookings, a café, and eco tourism with their Urban Prairie program. They invite everyone to visit and experience this amazing library destination.

1. Which myth about libraries or library staff do you most want to bust?

It’s always so cute when we see parents or caregivers visit us with their kiddos and inevitably say “Shhh, we’re in the library.” The Gaynor Family Regional Library is not a “shhh-ing” space. We encourage conversation throughout our library from laughing and singing in our children’s area to lively discussions around the fireplace. We are a community space for all to enjoy and encounter.

2. What compelled or inspired you to pursue library work?

It’s hard not to be passionate about literacy. Seeing the wonder and excitement of finding that perfect material for a patron is what keeps all of us going. Our inspiration is knowing that our library is a destination for all in our community, not just a place you pass through.

3. What has been your favourite library event?

Our past Halloween parties are legend. Some 600 guests would join us to enjoy crafts, games, special entertainers, and don’t forget the nibbles and monster juice!

4. What is the most pressing issue facing libraries today?

The challenge to intellectual freedoms is increasing and we would like to remind our communities that a library is and will continue to be a space for all.

5. What forthcoming book are you most excited about?

We are looking forward to Margaret Atwood’s Book of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts. Atwood is an exceptional writer, although she is sometimes kind of out there, there is no denying her talent, and most importantly her incredible vision of society and social norms. Who would have predicted that The Handmaid’s Tale doesn’t sound that far-fetched in today’s polarized world?

BONUS: Printer jams! What is the most surprising thing in your day to day that you spend more time on than you were prepared for?

Our library is very busy with programming, people meeting, students studying, events, classes, guest speakers, and cultural teachings. The coordination of all the room bookings and room requirements and event promotion is surprisingly demanding. Who knew that a library could benefit from a concierge!
