eMusic.com is an online music store that operates by subscription. It is headquartered in New York, New York, and owned by Dimensional Associates, LLC. eMusic is considered the second largest online music store and has over 250,000 subscribers.
I think that the eMusic subscription model has succesfully proven that people are willing to pay money for digital music. The appeal for paying for an eMusic subscription, other than the desire to retire gracefully from the high seas of piracy, is that there is no DRM on their music. Of course this has scared off the major labels but has given a shot in the arm to independents everywhere.
Well, the big news is that eMusic has just started offering audiobooks. They’re rolling audiobooks out with a two for one deal—a free book with a new subscription. A subscription is going to cost $9.99 a month so likely to get you one book. You can cancel anytime. There is at least one book on their site that I wouldn’t mind getting so we’ll see how it goes.
