New list charts bestselling books at Canada’s independent retailers
Toronto, ON–Tuesday, November 25, 2014–BookNet Canada and Retail Council of Canada are pleased to announce the launch of the Indie Bestsellers List. RCC will compile the list weekly from data provided by BookNet Canada’s national book sales tracking service, BNC SalesData.
The Indie Bestsellers list will feature top titles in categories including Canadian fiction and non-fiction, trade paperback fiction, and juvenile fiction. The list is the latest initiative for independent booksellers from Retail Council of Canada. “The tools, community, and support that independent booksellers have access to through RCC and BookNet are growing,” says Lesley Fletcher, Manager of Membership Services for the book industry for Retail Council of Canada. “We’re excited to be launching a list that will help celebrate the strengths of our independent booksellers and show the true impact they have on readership and sales in Canada.”
The Indie Bestsellers list is based on sales information provided by independent retailers across Canada. BookNet Canada estimates that their sales information represents approximately 85% of the Canadian English-language trade print book market. In addition to bestseller lists, this data is used to report on and study trends across the Canadian publishing industry.
Fletcher adds, “Detailed and reliable sales information from our members allows RCC to conduct better and more informed advocacy on behalf of Canada’s independent retail community.”
“Independent book retailers have always been an important component of the book supply-chain in Canada,” says BookNet CEO Noah Genner. “We are very excited to be able to work with the indies, and RCC, to create more awareness of their importance and the services they provide.”
