Making SalesData Easy on the Eyes

BNC SalesData has traditionally been all about the numbers. This past weekend we shook things up a bit and updated the site to include cover images on the Title/ISBN report.

You can see these glorious images by finding your way to the Title/ISBN report a variety of ways:

  • Enter an ISBN into the simple search box
  • Click through on an ISBN from a report, like the Bestseller or Title Trend report
  • If you have access, click on an ISBN from other BookNet Canada product sites like BNC PubFight or BNC Prospector

When you arrive at the cover Title/ISBN report this is what you’ll see:

Where do the cover images come from?

We pull the images from BiblioShare. If you are supplying cover images to the BiblioShare service, we will display them in BNC SalesData.

BNC SalesData is used by retailers, libraries, library wholesalers, wholesalers, sales and literary agents, and printers so having an image to provide a quick visual cue that you’ve found the right book can make all the difference in this crowded data landscape.

Why do I sometimes see images that look like the interior content of the book?

Don’t be alarmed. Just get in touch with us and we’ll fix it in a jiffy.

Why do I see the “No Image Available” placeholder instead of a cover?

If you do not supply images to BiblioShare, we can’t pull the cover. So we’ve put this in place until you do.

What is BiblioShare?

Biblioshare is a free bibliographic data web service created and supported by BookNet Canada. It is accessible by anyone who may be looking for a verified, valid source for content.

How do I get started with BiblioShare?

You need to sign an agreement with us after which we provide you with login credentials for you to begin submitting data via http://www.biblioshare.org or FTP. When you sign up for BiblioShare, we’ll provide you with FTP information. There, you’ll find three directories: ONIX, Image, and Position. Make sure your files go in the right directory or they will not be processed automatically.

Is there anything I need to know about supplying images?

It is really fast and easy. All cover images must be named only by ISBN 10 or 13.

Example: 9781234567890.jpg

Image Format

Because our image collection is intended for web display, standard web rules apply:

  • GIF, JPG, and PNG formats only.
  • RGB colour space.
  • Sized up to 1500 pixels on the long side.

We will create thumbnails of your images where the longest side is 180 pixels. In general, you should be sending BiblioShare the same images you send to Amazon, Indigo, etc.
