Peter Brantley—O’Reilly publishing commentator, email list manager to the (EPUB) stars, and generally insightful guy—has put together a smart, short piece on the conflicts between e-book DRM and long-term book ownership. In my Sony Reader trial, this was where I hit the wall: I was about to purchase a book that I knew I would read and re-read. Was I willing to risk that Sony would be my only e-book platform for the next 10-20 years? Sadly, no. I’m about to crack open my childhood copy of Treasure Island (itself bought at a YMCA used book sale) to read to my 4-year-old son. Could that take place in a world that was DRM’d, proprietary, or both?
