Most circulated books of 2024

It’s time for our annual mosts popular books of the year lists. We’ve published the bestselling books of 2024 and in this post we’re going to look at what’s been going on with libraries. We’ve identified the top-circulating titles in the Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Juvenile & Young Adult categories.

The following lists are based on data from January 1, 2024 to December 1, 2024, using LibraryData, BookNet’s national library collection and circulation analysis tool.

A quick note about the lists: LibraryData uses ISBN clusters to track circulation, holds, etc. in the system. This differs from SalesData, which reports data at a per-ISBN level. We do this because of how libraries report their collection data to us — their data is broken out by their Catalog ID or record. Each record can contain multiple ISBNs, often all of the editions of a single work. When you use the library, you put a hold on a copy of Pride and Prejudice, for example, and you usually don't mind which particular edition or ISBN you receive — just that you get the first available copy! Some clusters may contain ISBNs for different but related works. For example, occasionally all of the titles in a series or set may be clustered as a single work.

Four of this year’s titles are holdovers from last year’s list: The Four Winds, The Maid, The Last Thing He Told Me, and Lessons in Chemistry. Two other authors had titles on last year’s lists but this year new books cracked the top 10: Michael Connelly and John Grisham.

Top 10 most circulated Non-Fiction books of 2024

7. The Myth of Normal by Gabor Maté and Daniel Maté 🍁

8. I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

9. Ducks by Kate Beaton 🍁

10. The Wager by David Grann

Four of the top 10 books in the Non-Fiction category were in Biography & Autobiography BISAC category. Six of this year’s top 10 were also found in last year’s list.

3. The Baby-Sitters Club series by Ann M. Martin

4. Big Nate series by Lincoln Peirce

5. Bad Guys series by Aaron Blabey

6. Baby-Sitters Little Sister series by Ann M. Martin

7. Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey

8. Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland

9. Cat Kid Comic Club series by Dav Pilkey

10. Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling

Remarkably, the list is almost exactly the same as last year’s list. The only change is the Baby-Sitters Little Sister series moved up one place to sixth and the Captain Underpants series moved down one place to seventh.
