A new year is around the corner which means that it’s time to look back at the top-selling books in Canada in 2020.
As usual, we’ve identified the top-selling titles in the Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Juvenile/YA categories based on print sales volume in Canada over a 48-week period from Dec. 30, 2019 to Dec. 6, 2020 (according to BNC SalesData, which tracks print sales in the English-language trade market).
Keep in mind that the list of bestselling Canadian books we published in October was based on data from Jan. 1 to Sept. 26, 2020, so don’t be surprised to see some shifts and changes in the Canadian section of each category.

Sadly, only one Canadian title made it to the top 10, unlike last year, this time it’s not a book by Margaret Atwood. Instead, All the Devils Are Here, a Mystery & Detective title by Louise Penny is representing Canadian literature in this subject category.
Continuing the trend from past years, most of the books on this list are frontlist titles, in fact, nine out of 10 books were published either in 2019 or 2020. The exception, in this case, is Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, a Literary title originally published in August 2018, a book that also made it to fourth place on last year’s list.

2020 was, among many other things, the year of politics, and book sales reflected just that. Barack Obama’s book was launched in November and it climbed to the top of this list in just days, but last year was not so different, another member of the Obama family was also leading this list, Michelle Obama and her book Becoming made it to the 2018 and 2019 Non-Fiction top 10 lists.
Again, only one Canadian authored book made it to the list, From the Ashes by Jesse Thistle, originally published in August 2019.

This is very similar to what we saw in last year’s list, where only two of the top 10 books were written by someone other than Robert Munsch.
Unlike the other categories, there are only two frontlist titles in the top 10: Terry Fox and Me and A Bunch of Munsch!
